More Than 9,000 Catholic Churches Have Gotten Small Business Loans From The Federal Gov't During

As countries worldwide continue to face the novel Coronavirus that has forced lock-downs across the globe, the United States has implemented some programs to assist those affected by the economic shutdown.

One of those programs was the Paycheck Protection Program, a program created by the U.S. Small Business Administration to assist small businesses with keeping their workforce employed.

The problem though is that more than 12,000 Catholic churches applied for loans through the program, and at least 9,000 churches got them.

Additionally, 219 synagogues received over $50 million in loans.

The reason these houses of worship were able to get millions of dollars from the federal government is because the SBA states that, "Churches (including temples, mosques, synagogues, and other houses of worship), integrated auxiliaries of churches, and conventions or associations of churches qualify for PPP and EIDL loans as long as they meet the requirements of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and all other PPP and EIDL requirements." So, because churches are automatically granted nonprofit status, they can flaunt the separation of church and state and take millions of dollars of taxpayer money that was set up to help small businesses keep their labor force employed.

This is disgusting, and indicative of the kind of sinister manipulation of the law that many conservative lawmakers have been pulling off for years now.

Religion is doing nothing to help us survive this pandemic, and throwing away millions of dollars of taxpayer money to support it is no way to get through this mess.
