Blessing For Space Force Bible At National Cathedral Draws Criticism

On Sunday, there was, as is usual, a service at the Washington National Cathedral. This particular service was a little unusual, though.

It was at this service that a blessing was performed for what is being called "the official Bible for the new U.S. Space Force."

Uhhh... OK.

In case you need reminding, President Trump first proposed the Space Force, a new branch of the United States' military, back in 2018. As of last month, it is now a reality.

So, with the Space Force ramping up and getting ready to start recruiting, they needed a Bible for swearing in commanders.

People have been quick to condemn the move.

Mikey Weinstein, the founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, wrote in a statement, "The utilization of a Christian bible to 'swear in' commanders of the new Space Force or any other [Department of Defense] branch at ANY level is completely violative of the bedrock separation of church and state mandate of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution."

The ceremony included some sickening praise for Trump himself. "Almighty God, who set the planets in their courses and the stars in space, look with favor, we pray you, upon the commander in chief, the 45th president of this great nation, who looked to the heavens and dared to dream of a safer future for all mankind," said Rev. Carl Wright during the ceremony.

An Air Force spokesperson said in an emailed statement that this Bible will be used to swear in General John Raymond as the chief of space operations, but that "there is no official religious or other sacred text, nor is there any requirement for a member to use any sacred or religious text, during swearing in ceremonies."

Oh, good, so then what was the point of Sunday's ceremony and disgusting display of worship of Donald Trump?

Air Force press desk officer Lynn Kirby also stated that the choice to be sworn in with or without a Bible, "will remain a personal choice for each individual swearing in."

As the Trump administration tries to barrel towards space while, at the same time, categorically denying any science they do not like, they continue to put Christianity front-and-center. It should not be surprising, given that Trump's most loyal support back in 2016 and still today remains Evangelical Christians. His transparent attempts to keep them happy have become frequent and common.

What a horrifying mix of 21st century technology and Iron Age superstition...
