There have been some ridiculous stories in the news recently about conservatives preaching that President Donald Trump is the "chosen one" sent by God to rule America.
The two major ones I want to focus on are Rick Perry and Nikki Haley.
Rick Perry served as the governor of Texas from 2000 to 2015, before assuming the role of Secretary of Energy in Donald Trump's administration.
Nikki Haley was the first woman to serve as South Carolina's governor, holding office from 2011 to 2017. She then served as the ambassador to the United Nations for the United States under Donald Trump's administration.
Both are Republicans. Both have tendered their resignations. Haley resigned in October 2018. This was as she was being accused of misconduct for accepting luxury private flights from South Carolina business leaders.
Perry has only just resigned last month, a year after Haley. The Secretary of Energy's appointment was heavily criticized after he called for the Department of Energy to be dissolved during a presidential debate in 2011. He also apparently did not know the Department of Energy was responsible for the country's nuclear weapons.
He resigned after drawing scrutiny for what many saw as a controversial role in President Trump’s efforts to force Ukraine officials to investigate the son of former Vice President Biden.
These two geniuses are the ones who have recently been vocal about Donald Trump's "divine" appointment to the office of the presidency.
Perry could be seen on Fox News on Sunday telling viewers that God likes to use flawed people in his plans, and Trump is, of course, very flawed. Perry said he gave Trump “a little one-pager on those Old Testament kings about a month ago. And I shared with him, I said, ‘Mr. President, I know there are people who say, you know, you are the chosen one,’ and I said, ‘You were.’”
That may have been moments before Perry laboriously kissed Trump's ass with faithful fervor...
Haley was interviewed by David Brody from the Christian Broadcasting Network. Brody asked, “What God is doing exactly by putting Donald Trump as the president of the United States?”
Haley replied, “It goes to show that everything happens for a reason. Look at the results of Donald Trump as president.” She then praised Trump for growing the job market, the economy, and the “courage” to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. She then said, “There’s been a lot of courage coming from this president to change what was the status quo.”
Pardon me while I barf over this disgusting display...
I wrote a bit in 2016 about the Christian Right's love of Donald Trump. It was Trump's support from Christians that ultimately drove me to start this blog in the first place. After Trump's decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, I wrote more about the apocalyptic, and frightening, reasoning that Christians have for endorsing Trump.
With all my coverage of politicians in the United States giving a disturbing preference to Christianity, this is still a frightening mentality. The folks who are so ready to embrace the Armageddon Lobby-type of mentality.
This kind of insane religiosity pervading our politics is exactly why I started this blog, and exactly why we need to keep opposing this kind of dangerous superstitious thinking.
