NM Priest Sentenced To Thirty Years For Abusing Altar Boy After Fleeing The Country

A former Catholic priest who spent twenty six years on the run was sentenced to thirty years in prison for sexually abusing an alter boy.

Arthur Perrault, 81, was convicted in April of seven counts for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old altar boy at St. Bernadette's Parish in Albuquerque, NM.

Perrault is alleged to have abused the victim in multiple places, including a veteran's cemetery and a military base. Raping kids was apparently not enough of a thrill for this guy, he also needed to add the ambiance of a veteran's cemetery to the mix.

Perrault abused the boy for two years, but when he learned that other victims were going to come forward he fled the country in 1992 and settled in Morocco where he taught language classes.

One of Perrault's victims wrote a letter to the judge prior to his sentencing. In the letter he said, "In Morocco, while Perrault lived freely and likely victimized more young students, I and other victims were left with the burden of shame, the trauma of sexual assault, and the struggle to cope with the symptoms of his abuse. Now it's time for him to cope with prison. I urge you to impose the maximum sentence."

Morocco does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, but after authorities in Morocco arrested Perrault in 2017 the government expelled him and he was sent back to the U.S.

Prosecutors in the case said that "The indictment captured only a small fraction of the crimes he actually committed, naming just one of his many victims and, by virtue of the constraints of federal jurisdiction, included only the molestations he inflicted on federal enclaves."

In addition to serving at St. Bernadette's Parish, Perrault also served at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Our Lady of the Assumption, and worked as a teacher at St. Pius High School.

Perrault is alleged to have abused many young boys over his career, but he has only been charged with molesting one victim. At least this one case is enough to sentence him to a prison term that will likely be the remainder of his life.

The Catholic Church's abuse scandals have seen several priests get away with their crimes, but at least this one will be spending the rest of his life in prison.
