RI Bishop Posts Ridiculous Hateful Tweet About Pride Month

This post focuses on a story close to home, because I happen to have grown up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the U.S. And this story is all about the stupid and hateful things said by the current bishop of the Rhode Island diocese.

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin took to Twitter on Saturday to post the following:

The tweet ended up getting a lot of attention, and a lot of backlash.

RI Pride responded by posting the following:

Joe Lazzerini, the president of Rhode Island Pride, was bewildered by Tobin's tweet.

"There are Catholics all across Rhode Island who support the LGBTQIA plus community and I honestly think that it's shameful that Bishop Tobin is resorting to these attacks on the first day of pride month, on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall," Lazzerini said.

"Pride isn't harmful, love is not harmful, it's 2019," Lazzarini said.

Things get even worse when we look into Tobin's history.

Tobin was named an auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh in 1992. If you have followed the news about the Catholic Church in the United States in the last several months, then you know that there was a massive grand jury report that found more than 300 priests committed sexual abuse over 70 years in Pennsylvania.

Now, regarding the abuse committed by priests in Pennsylvania, just check out this article in the Providence Journal where Tobin acknowledged that he, "became aware of incidents of sexual abuse when they were reported to the diocese." Tobin said, “My responsibilities as Vicar General and General Secretary of the diocese did not include clergy assignments or clergy misconduct, but rather other administrative duties such as budgets, property, diocesan staff, working with consultative groups, etc. Even as an auxiliary bishop, I was not primarily responsible for clergy issues.″ So take all that in. He tweeted that Pride Month is especially harmful to children, but he is also on record acknowledging that he was aware of priests abusing children in his diocese, but because it was "outside his department" he ignored it. This kind of monster is exactly why the Catholic Church needs to be stripped of any and all respect, and we need to get rid of this dinosaur of an organization. It is nothing more than a criminal syndicate.
