WV Church Burns Down, God Saves Bibles With Unimpressive 'Miracle'

This is the story of a church that burned down in West Virginia, and the lunacy that followed.

This past Sunday, a few hours before morning mass, the Freedom Ministries Church in Daniels, West Virginia caught fire. Firefighters rushed to the scene and after hours of work, were eventually able to extinguish the blaze.

The church sustained heavy damage, but the firefighters were astonished to find that the church's Bibles were all unharmed.

In a silly Facebook post, the Coal City Fire Department said, "Though odds were against us, God was not. Picture this, a building so hot that at one point in time, firefighters had to back out. In your mind, everything should be burned, ashes. Not a single bible was burned and not a single cross was harmed!! Not a single firefighter was hurt!"

The story quickly went viral, and has been covered by a few major news outlets. Coverage has been pretty laughable, with people praising the "miracle."

So, wait. It is a miracle that God saved some of his books, even though he let his church burn down? What stopped God from just saving his whole church?

The congregation is holding services in their nearby youth building, which was not damaged by the fire, because the church is not currently safe. They have promised to continue and rebuild.

In the meantime, those of us less inclined to believe in cheap miracles, could point out that most of the Bibles that survived were stored in the pockets in the back of seats.

Sooo... you know, they could have been partially insulated from the heat. That could have been enough to keep those pages from reaching the necessary 451º Fahrenheit to achieve ignition.

Plus, what else survived in the church? If you look at the photo of the exterior, you can see how much of the structure remained intact. What kind of mundane things survived inside? Did God also save the priest's favorite lampshade? Is that a miracle, too?

But I suppose all that is way less exciting than, "God used his magic voodoo to protect his books while he let his house burn down! Oooooo...!"

Religious folks do this sort of thing all the time. They are desperate for validation and confirmation (which seems to go against that whole "faith" thing). A tragedy happens, in this case the burning down of their church, and they cling to whatever they can in order to figure out how God could allow it to happen.

I just wish the media would do a better job covering the story, and not indulge the nutty ideas of miracles so easily.
