Head Of Russian Orthodox Church Says Smartphones Will Bring The Antichrist

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church believes that the data-gathering happening through smartphones will usher in the arrival of the Antichrist.

Patriarch Kirill is the current leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, and has held that position for 10 years on February 1st.

He was speaking in an interview broadcast on state television on January 7th when he said that the church is concerned "someone can know exactly where you are, know exactly what you are interested in, know exactly what you are afraid of."

Ummm... your God is supposed to be able to do those things already, man.

Anyway, Kirill's fear is that a single person will be able to take control of the entire world using the data gathered from smartphones, and that person will be the Antichrist.

Kirill explained, saying, “Control from one point is a foreshadowing of the coming of Antichrist, if we talk about the Christian view. Antichrist is the person who will be at the head of the world wide web that controls the entire human race.”

So, Kirill believes that someone will tap into every last cellphone and computer on the internet, and use that to take control of the entire human race. And that person will necessarily be the Antichrist because of Christian "prophecy."

Believe it or not, the Antichrist is not actually mentioned that much in the Bible. He shows up in a few scattered passages of the epistles from John. A figure that most Christians believe to be the Antichrist is talked about in the Book of Revelation, but the figure is referred to as the "Beast." 2 Thessalonians, an epistle attributed to Paul, but which most scholars think he did not write, also discusses a figure that appears to be the Antichrist, but there he is called the "man of sin" or "man of lawlessness."

In the Book of Revelation, the Beast is "given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast." (Revelation 13:7-8)

In 2 Thessalonians, we read about the "man of lawlessness" that "He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God." (2 Thessalonians 2:4)

So because of passages like that, Kirill thinks that smartphones will give us the Antichrist.

I happen to think that Kirill is just plain bonkers, but hey, at least he gets to wear that sweet hat.
