Dutchman Wants To Sail His Ark To Israel... Seriously

A man in Holland is hoping to sail his full-scale replica of Noah's Ark all the way to Israel.

Johan Huibers is a Christian carpenter who built a life-size replica of Noah's Ark back in 2012. The wood consumed in constructing this 400-foot-long monstrosity trees consumed as many as 12,000 trees.

Huibers' ark at least has the benefit of being sea-worthy, as opposed to some other arks out there (I'm looking at you, Ken Ham).

So, since his ark can actually handle some waves, Huibers wants to sail it to Israel. That has been his goal since he first built it, a project that took 4 years.

So why did Huibers raise $5 million and spend four years building this boat? Well, in his own words, “It may sound scary, but I believe everything written in this book, cover to cover.” Huibers was referencing a Dutch translation of the Hebrew Bible. “This is a copy of God’s ship. It only makes sense to take it to God’s land,” he continued.

Yes, Johan, that is scary.

A major hurdle for Huibers' goal is that his ark does not have a motor, it has to be moved by tugboats. The original plans for taking the ship to Israel were not realized due to wildfires at the time, and now he no longer has the $1.3 million needed to rent the tugboats for the journey. And since God does not seem interested in helping out, Huibers is having a tough time.

While talking about his plans to sail the ship to Israel, Huibers said, “I love the land, I love the country, I love the people. They don’t obey, they do what they want, they drive like mad, shove while waiting in line and don’t listen to anyone. Just like me.”

So, he likes them because of how inconsiderate they are of others? How charming. Although, I guess that makes sense if they really are God's chosen people.

Who knows if Huibers will get the money necessary to move his ark to Israel? He was able to get together the $5 million to build it, so getting the $1.3 million to get it from Holland to Israel is certainly possible.

In the meantime, rather than convince me of the truth of his Bible, all I see is people wasting time and resources in a desperate bid to reinforce their beliefs in ancient fairy tales.
