Yesterday, around 3:15 pm, a man walked in to a Catholic store in the St. Louis area. He sexually assaulted at least one woman in the store. He also shot one woman in the head, who later died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
It is not clear at this point, based on police statements and news reports, whether the victim of the gunshot was the same woman who was sexually assaulted. Other women in the store may have been assaulted as well, but that has not been confirmed by police yet.
The assailant is still loose as of this writing. He is described in police statements as a white male 45 to 50 years old, 5'7", heavy set, and wearing a black jacket and a black or dark grey hat. Police are still searching for him and they consider him armed and extremely dangerous.
Reports indicate that it seems the victims did not know the assailant, and his motives for choosing this particular location are unknown at this point.
The store released a statement, in which they said, "We are shocked and saddened by the events that occurred at our West County location Monday afternoon. This was a senseless tragedy. Please join us as we pray for the victims and their families. The safety and security of our employees and customers is our highest priority. Our retail locations will be closed for business on Tuesday and will reopen on Wednesday. We are cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation, and we will share details as appropriate. We appreciate your patience, grace and prayers during this difficult time."
