We Have 10 Years To Get The Climate Under Control According To The IPCC

October 8, 2018

Today's post is a departure from my usual coverage. I usually write about the harm that religion causes, or examinations of religious thinking, or descriptions of religious history, but today I write about a recent report from the IPCC on the state of the Earth's climate. I chose to cover this because of the frequent opposition to climate science we have seen from the devoutly religious.

The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has released a report that gives the governments of the planet just 10 years to drastically reduce the output of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. If they fail to do so, the planet will see a catastrophic rise in temperature within the next few decades.

Currently, humans release 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. As the Washington Post reported, "Overall reductions in emissions in the next decade would probably need to be more than 1 billion tons per year, larger than the current emissions of all but a few of the very largest emitting countries. By 2050, the report calls for a total or near-total phaseout of the burning of coal."

This report comes just a couple of weeks after a Trump administration report that the planet will warm a disastrous 7-degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century.

The Trump administration's response to these findings? They decided... meh! It will happen regardless of what we do, so no sense in fighting it. So they continue to strip away environmental protection policies. The Trump administration report was issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It was written to justify President Trump’s decision to freeze federal fuel-efficiency standards for automobiles built after 2020. Their point in writing this was that the extra greenhouse gases introduced to the atmosphere by Trump's STUPID decision would be just a "drop in the bucket."

So, the proposal would increase greenhouse gas emissions, but the impact statement says that the policy would contribute very little to the overall problem. Why am I spending time on this in an atheist blog?

Well, in the story I linked above about GOP Representative Tim Walberg, he had the gall to say, "I believe there's climate change. I believe there's been climate change since the beginning of time. Do I think man has some impact? Yeah, of course. Can man change the entire universe? No. Why do I believe that? Well, as a Christian, I believe that there is a creator in God who is much bigger than us. And I'm confident that, if there's a real problem, he can take care of it."

Yup, Trump and his lackeys are just riding the wave of religious delusion that believes that, "Hey, if things get really bad, God will swoop in like a super-hero and save us from this disaster we've created for ourselves. In the meantime, we get to just rake in the mountains of money that come from fucking up the planet. But it's OK, Jesus approves of all of this!"

This is why I was compelled to cover this story. I find it simultaneously infuriating and bewildering. I just cannot understand the thought process behind these massively hypocritical and manipulative monsters who claim to represent the public good while also condemning the future to an unlivable climate.

They literally want whatever money they can accumulate now at the complete expense of any descendants they may have. It is disgusting.
