Florida is a weird place. Really weird. And today's story out of Key West fits the bill.
The first Key West mayoral debate got off to an interesting start on Monday. One of the candidates, Sloan Bashinsky, took a phone call from God. Yup, you read that correctly.
Bashinsky, "answering" his phone (which was not ringing), said, "Hello? What? God? You're joking! You want to know why they're talking about cutting the PAL and the Boys and Girls Club? Have they lost their minds? You want to know? Yeah, I think they have, anyway."
Yes, it was really weird. And sad, if you ask me. Bashinsky's stunt got him some laughter and applause, but judging by the video it was only a small percentage of the audience that was truly impressed.
Bashinsky went on to say, "I have said every time I ran, I ran because God told me to run. This is known to everybody. I think anyone who wants this job is insane."
So, you really do not want this job, but God is making you do it? That seems like a terrible disposition for a politician. Anyone representing me in government better be there because they want to be, and not because their imaginary friend is forcing them into it.
As you can probably tell by what Bashinsky said about every time he ran, this is not his first mayoral race. He has run in nearly every election for the last several years, and has failed to win any of them yet.
Maybe this is all just part of God's test... ugh.
Perhaps this will be Bashinsky's lucky year. If he does win, I wonder if he will have a special dedicated "God phone" installed in the mayor's office.
