Pope Francis said that only heterosexual couples can form real families in recent remarks he made.
The pope was addressing the Forum delle Famiglie, an Italian movement that represents Catholic families.
"It is painful to say this today: People speak of varied families, of various kinds of family," but "the family [as] man and woman in the image of God is the only one," Francis said.
In past posts, like this one, I have criticized everyone's favorite "liberal" pope for not actually being as progressive as some people think. For example, he protects pedophile priests, and under his watch the church still has the same anti-contraception stance that is pushed in AIDS-ravaged communities in Africa.
The pope then also compared abortions of seriously ill fetuses to Nazi eugenics. "In the last century, the entire world was scandalized by what the Nazis did to ensure the purity of their race. Today we do the same, but with white gloves," he said.
It really is not surprising at this point when the pope or other religious leaders say things like this. As the number of non-religious people continues to grow, holding on to outdated views like these will just keep pushing younger people away. I am reminded of last month's story about the Christian Right's political battles contributing to more people leaving the church.
In the end, the church might just be their own worst enemy.
