26-Foot Tall Marilyn Monroe Statue Moons Church, Upsets Churchgoers

Marilyn Monroe, the legendary actress, singer, and model who tragically died at the age of 36, is being celebrated with a statue in Stamford, Connecticut. Not everyone appreciates the statue, however.

The 26-foot tall Marilyn Monroe statue depicts the famous moment in "The Seven Year Itch" where Monroe's skirt is blown up by air rushing up from a subway grate. The statue is positioned in such a way that Monroe is showing her bum to the First Congregational Church of Stamford. Some church members find it offensive and disrespectful.

Lorri Tamburro told reporters, “I just find the position to be offensive. It was, in my eyes, very disrespectful. I looked at it and I think because of what I saw with all these little kids looking up, the height is ruining it. It’s ruining beautiful Marilyn.”

The statue, a piece titled "Forever Marilyn," is one of 36 statues by artist Seward Johnson that will be on display in downtown Stamford through the summer. This is all part of the city's annual Art in Public Places program.

Hopefully any churchgoers who take offense will be able to get over themselves, because we still have a few months of summer to get through. To his credit, the pastor of the church seemed to be taking it a bit more humorously than Tamburro. Rev. Dr. Todd Grant Yonkman asked, "Maybe the city would let us give her some pants?"

Whatever happens, one thing is for sure, after more than 60 years have passed since she began making films, Marilyn Monroe still has what it takes to shake things up.
