Trump Signs Order Giving More Power To Faith Groups Receiving Taxpayer Money

Yesterday, on The National Day of Prayer, President Trump signed an executive order that will allow faith groups receiving federal funds to proselytize to those they serve.

The order undoes rules established by the Obama administration that limited the ability of faith groups to preach to those they served for those groups receiving federal funds. So, for example, if you go to a soup kitchen run by a church which receives federal money, you could be made to listen to a sermon before getting your soup.

During the signing ceremony, which was held in the White House’s Rose Garden, Trump stated, “Faith is more powerful than government, and nothing is more powerful than God.” What a wonderfully idiotic and theocratic sentiment.

Trump also promised, “As president, I will always protect religious liberty.” The Cheetos-dust-covered wannabe despot’s order also renames the White House’s faith-based office to the White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative. The role of those working in the office will be to consult with faith leaders and to advise the attorney general on the ways the federal government has failed “to comply with protections of federal law for religious liberty.” You know, important stuff like that. Trump also said, "This office will also help ensure that faith-based organizations have equal access to government funding and the equal right to exercise their deeply held beliefs."

Yes, because the government should give money to churches that will withhold services from the needy if the needy happen to be gay, or of a different faith. That is of great concern to critics of Trump’s order, like Rachel Laser. Laser is the CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. She told reporters, "The whole Trump-Pence line of activity around this issue is enabling fundamentalists to impose their religion on the rest of us.” She warned that women, gays and lesbians, and members of minority religious groups may have great difficulty receiving taxpayer-funded services.

Trump, I am sure with plenty of prodding from Mike Pence, continues to take actions that are transparently aimed at pleasing his Evangelical Christian base of support. They lap it up every time he signs an order or makes a proclamation that aligns with their political agenda. That is why they overlook all of his very non-Christian behavior.

Although, at least some Evangelicals are recognizing the cognitive dissonance.
