Christians Are Freaking Out Over The Name Of This Ice Cream Shop

A Toronto-based ice cream company has served up quite the controversy among Canadian and American Christians. Why are these Christians so angry about ice cream? The ice cream company is called Sweet Jesus.

Sweet Jesus is an ice cream restaurant that has locations throughout Ontario and Alberta, as well as one location in the U.S. in Maryland. The company is attempting to expand to additional areas in the United States, but has recently come under fire from angry Christians who decry the blasphemous use of Jesus’s name. They also take umbrage with the use of a lightning bolt-like “s” in the marketing of the product, which they say is reminiscent of the SS soldiers in Nazi Germany. The upside-down cross used on some of the product packaging is also a source of contention.

Christians are demanding that the company change its name and marketing. Some of them have created or signed online petitions demanding as much. This petition has a little more than 1,200 signatures as of this writing, and this CitizenGO petition has nearly 10,000 signatures.

In response to all this ridiculous anger from Christians with far too much time on their hands, the company posted the following statement on their website:

“Our name was created from the popular phrase that people use as an expression of enjoyment, surprise or disbelief. Our aim is not to offer commentary on anyone’s religion or belief systems. Our own organization is made up of amazing people that represent a wide range of cultural and religious beliefs.”

One of the company’s owners, Andrew Richmond, told the Toronto Star that the idea of the name came from one of his other restaurants. A server in his taco restaurant would always say, “Sweet Jesus!” whenever he served ice cream to patrons.

But that will not satisfy the anger of all these outraged Christians! Just look at what the originator of the petition had to say:

“It is time for Christians to take a stand against the Anti-Christ agenda, clearly now in open season against Christianity. If this Ice Cream chain is permitted to keep the mocking and blasphemous name of Sweet Jesus, what is next?”

Uhhh… maybe more ice cream? What are you looking for here?

I also just want to take a moment to highlight one of the comments on the petition. Check out what one of these loving Christians posted on there.

OK, blasphemy I understand, but PEDOPHILIA? Where the hell did that come from? They sell ice cream, not child pornography. By the way, if she wants pedophilia, she has a much higher chance of finding it at her local church than she does at an ice cream shop. Or does it not count when priests do it?

The needless outrage, dramatically exaggerated sentiments of persecution, and blatant hypocrisy here are on full display. These Christians are so fast to declare that they are “under attack” by anti-Christian forces, while at the same time insulting and threatening everyone who does not share their Iron Age beliefs in a magical man who could turn water into wine and who could skip across a lake.

I hope that the owners do not change the name of the company. All ideas need to be subjected to mockery, especially religious ideas that are based on zero evidence and are a continual source of division and violence among people all over the world.
