Republican Says God Will Save Us From Climate Change

A Republican (I know, shocking) congressman told his constituents this past Friday that God will take care of climate change if it turns out to be a threat.

Tim Walberg was speaking at a town hall in Coldwater, MI on Friday when he said, "I believe there's climate change. I believe there's been climate change since the beginning of time. Do I think man has some impact? Yeah, of course. Can man change the entire universe? No."

So, he acknowledged climate change and humanity’s impact on it, so that was something. But then he went wildly off the rails.

Walberg went on to say, "Why do I believe that? Well, as a Christian, I believe that there is a creator in God who is much bigger than us. And I'm confident that, if there's a real problem, he can take care of it.”

Cue the sad trombone. You should have just shut up when you were ahead, Tim.

Let’s look at this for a second, though. Walberg says he is a Christian, and that God will save us if humans create a climate too inhospitable to life. Where the hell did he get that idea? He sure did not get it from his Bible. If humans have the audacity to destroy the planet that God created for us, why would he save us? Did he save the people of Sodom and Gomorrah? Didn’t he drown almost the entire world in the Great Flood? Didn’t God gift Peter with the ability to cause people to drop dead if they lied to him?

God does not have a great track record when it comes to saving people, especially from their own hubris. So even if we had evidence for the Christian God, why would we expect him to save us from a mess that we not only created, but continue to add to despite decades of warning? This is precisely the kind of situation that Walberg should expect God to either let play out, or he should expect God to annihilate us for desecrating the planet he gifted to us.

As every year the last few years has set a new record for warmth, we are facing a tremendous threat from climate change. Rather than wait for things to get bad enough for God to intervene, why not just try to keep things from getting bad ourselves? We have the technology. Why endure unneeded tragedy that we can prevent without divine intervention? Walberg seems to want to make a martyr out of the entire human race.
