In Tampa, FL it was revealed this week that a white supremacist, who recently converted to Islam, had been arrested late last week for murdering two of his neo-Nazi roommates.
Devon Arthurs, 18, murdered his roommates Jeremy Himmelman, 22, and Andrew Oneschuk, 18, by shooting them both multiple times. Arthurs was arrested following an attempted armed robbery of a smoke shop. Police discovered the bodies of his murdered roommates shortly after his arrest.
In a strange twist, Arthurs’s other roommate (last roommate?), Brandon Russell, another white supremacist, was later arrested following a traffic stop in Key Largo where police discovered he was in possession of explosive materials.
Arthurs told authorities that he murdered his two roommates because they were intolerant of his recent conversion to Islam. White supremacists are intolerant? What a shock!
Arthurs informed the police that he had shared the same white supremacist beliefs as Himmelman and Oneschuk, but that he converted to Islam recently. Himmelman and Oneschuk allegedly made frequent mockery of Islam, which offended Arthurs more and more until he murdered them. According to the arrest report Arthurs “has become angered by the world’s anti-Muslim sentiment and had wanted to bring attention to his cause.” As police were arresting him Arthurs is quoted as saying, “I had to do it. This wouldn’t have to happen if your country didn’t bomb my country.”
There is too little information available to know exactly why Arthurs converted to Islam, but we can say something about his intellectual scrutiny in general. Whenever people fail to examine their own beliefs critically, cannot or choose not to defend their ideas with words and reason, or angrily desire to control the thoughts or reactions of others, this is the kind of violence you get. It is unbelievably sad that in the 21st century we still have so many individuals who not only choose violence, but who choose violence in the defense of really bad ideas that should have been abandoned centuries ago.
