On Thursday morning, Richard Rojas drove his Honda Accord up onto the sidewalk in Times Square and plowed through a crowd of pedestrians. One 18-year-old woman was killed, and 22 more people were injured, some critically.
Rojas sped down three blocks before crashing his car at the corner of 7th Avenue and West 45th Street. Rojas told police that God made him do it, but he also tested positive for PCP. Rojas had been arrested twice before, once in 2008 and again in 2015, for drunk driving. Rojas also reportedly suffers from "psychological issues" and he told police that he had expected them to shoot him.
Despite Rojas's claim that God made him do this, it really seems like this tragedy was due to a combination of drugs and his mental health issues. I have to wonder though, what kind of reaction would we have seen from the media, public, and certain politicians if instead of saying "God made me do it," he had said, "Allah made me do it."
