A Baptist church in Washington DC has named a married, gay couple to be their senior ministers. Sally Sarratt and Maria Swearingen will be co-pastors of the Calvary Baptist Church, which was founded in Washington DC 155 years ago. The women will begin their service to the congregation on February 26th.
While I find it encouraging that such churches exist that are supportive of both women and the LGBTQ community, I cannot help but marvel at the cherry-picking these people must engage in. Can you imagine Sally and Maria reading 1 Timothy during mass? 1 Timothy 2:12 famously states, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” (NIV)
How do they reconcile that? That is just one example out of hundreds that should be challenging their position as leaders of the church. I am not sure how they avoid collapsing into gibbering lunatics from a massive, overwhelming amount of cognitive dissonance. Not only are they devoting their lives to preaching ancient fairy tales and delusional fantasies, they are basing their lives on a book filled with passages that outright denigrate and condemn them.
Take Romans 1:27, in which Paul says, "In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." (NIV) So yes, based on the fact that these are women and homosexuals we are talking about, it is perplexing to me that they can be so devoted to a religion that so plainly hates them.
But hey, progress is progress, I guess.
